You will evaluate the step-by-step progression of instruction from direct instruction to collaboration to independent learning. You will also analyze the roles of the teacher versus the student in each component of your lesson. You will create a gradual release lesson plan by the end of the course, ready for implementation in your classroom.

  1. Creating Student ownership
    1. This introductory lesson provides an overview of the Gradual Release of Responsibility teaching model, the principle behind the method, basics of implementation, and its value as an instructional strategy.
  2. Supporting Student Learning
    1. This lesson discusses the benefits of implementing the Gradual Release of Responsibility model in the classroom and how the model supports and enhances student learning. We also delve deeper into the different steps along the gradual release pathway, including the roles of both the teacher and student.
  3. Putting it All Together
    1. Using the sample provided, build your own gradual release plan for an upcoming lesson.
  4. Applying What you Have Learned
    1. Get ideas on how to implement the concepts into your classroom, find a list of online resources that feature ideas for different components of the gradual release process, and read the research behind this content.
