Basic Life Support (BLS) Recertification

Details

The BLS course is designed for first-response techniques for cardiac arrest. This includes CPR technique, differences between adult, child and infant resuscitation and recent updates to technique recommendations by the American Heart Association. This course is prepared for people who have passed the BLS exam before and is shorter than the full BLS Certification course.

Outcome

  • Students demonstrate their knowledge of course work by successfully completing a multiple-choice exam
  • Student will receive BLS provider card PDF file immediately after completion of the course

Assessment

  • Student understands steps and processes necessary to increase chances of survival for a cardiac arrest
  • Learns all concepts shown in Outline below

BLS Unit 1: General Concepts

Review of updated 2010 resuscitation guidelines from the American Heart Association.

BLS Unit 2: BLS and CPR for Adults

Review basic CPR procedure for one and two rescuers

BLS Unit 3: Automated External Defibrillator for Older Children and Adults

Understand basic safety and conditions for using an AED

BLS Unit 4: BLS for Children (Age 1 to Puberty)

Survey ventilation and compression metrics for children

BLS Unit 5: BLS for Infants (to 12 months old)

Survey ventilation and compression metrics for infants and specific compression technique

BLS Unit 6: Automated External Defibrillator for Infants & Children (1-8 years)

See preferred equipment and AED settings to use for children

BLS Unit 7: CPR with an Advanced Airway

Changes to compression ration based on airway availability

BLS Unit 8: Mouth-to-Mouth Rescue Breathing

Compare infant technique to normal technique

BLS Unit 9: Rescue Breathing

Timing schedules for rescue breathing situations

BLS Unit 10: Relief of Choking

Discuss proper Heimlich Maneuver technique and modified technique for infants

Requirements

Hardware Requirements:

  • This course can be taken on either a PC or Mac.

Software Requirements:

  • PC: Windows 8 or newer.
  • Mac: OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later.
  • Browser: The latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox are preferred. Microsoft Edge and Safari are also compatible.

Other:

  • Email capabilities and access to a personal email account.
